Things to consider when shopping for the Winter

Today is the official first day of Winter – and those of us who live in colder climates know that sometimes you have to exchange style for warmth. NOT THIS YEAR! I’m challenging myself to take an alternative route; one that keeps me warm AND fashionable – WHY NOT? Here are some tips on how to keep warm, stylish and practical this Winter.

Things to consider when shopping for the Winter

  1. LAYERING: The key to the perfect Winter look is to layer, layer – layer. Opt for stylish sweaters and long sleeved shirts always  – and add a form fitting tank top underneath to keep cold air from running up against your skin.
  2. SHOP JACKETS WITH LINING: When I’m looking for a Winter jacket I always look first to see if the jacket has some type of internal lining because I’ve had the most success with styles that meet this criteria. Take a look at the jacket in my photo to see what I mean. It’s a faux sheep skin lined shearling jacket. The added lining and heavy duty suede give me all the comfort and heat when temperatures head south.
  3. LAYER BELOW THE WAIST TOO: It’s always a good idea to get a thin pair of leggings to slide under your pants during the Winter. I say, shop leggings that are thin and made from a comfortable material like cotton because you are less likely to know they are there as you go about your day. The form fitting legging will help the cold air stay out, and the cotton will rub seamlessly against your skin as you face the Winter chill. Also, I’d recommend buying WINTER JEANS that may not be as expensive as jeans you’d wear in other season’s that aren’t as messy as the Winter. This way you keep the slush and Winter grime off of your pricier pants!
  4. BOOTS: Not only are the boots you choose necessary to help you stay safe in icy and snowy conditions, but they can also make or break a Winter look in my opinion. Look for boots with proven warmth and ability to navigate extreme Winter conditions – that don’t compromise on style!

UNION JACK BOOTS | DR. MARTENS PADTEN IN BLACK WYOMING [$219 CAD]

Dr. Martens are an iconic Winter boot that’ll give you the style I was talking about. They are durable and safe in icy and snowy conditions.

NORDSTROM | J.O.A FAUX SHEARLING JACKET [$203.75 CAD]

Nordstrom is notorious for their selection of stylish and practical Winter fashion. This FAUX shearling coat is a warm staple that can be incorporated into any closet

H&M  | BLACK JEANS [$12.99 CAD]

A comfy and inexpensive pair of black jeans are sure to be worn over and over again during the Winter. I suggest inexpensive because the salt and slush can become a nuisance in the Winter and constant washing won’t make a good impression at the end of the season. If the jeans are inexpensive, you likely won’t mind over washing and over drying them. H&M always has a cost effective – comfy jean on their racks!

HUDSON’S BAY | HUDSON ROOM WOMENS DRESS SHIRT [$14.99 CAD]

Oversized dress shirts in the Winter are a go to when you want to elevate your look with ease. They are especially comfortable and The Hudson’s Bay has a wide selection and an assortment of colours to choose from.

NORDSTROM | J.O.A SHEARLING JACKET [$203.75 CAD]

Here is another option for the jacket I am wearing. Nordstrom is your go to shop for this style!

We don’t have winter here in the island, but whenever it changes its breeze to a bit colder, I also wear a slightly winter-themed outfit. Boots are important for me and nice jacket 🙂
